Shvydkoy, Mikhail (minister of culture)

Mikhail Shvydkoy is a graduate of State Institute of Theatrical Art (GITIS) (1971). His speciality was British theater in the 18th century.

1973-1990 editor, executive secretary, deputy editor-in-chief of "Teatr" ("Theater") journal.

1975-1993 commentator on TV and radio, presenter of monthly "Theater and life" and "Portraits of friends" programs.

1980-1991 author of screenplays for documentaries and TV productions

1991-1993 director general of publishing complex "Kultura" (Culture) of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. In May 1992 he was one of the founders of the Fund for support and development of dramatic art

On March 19, 1993 Shvydkoy was appointed deputy minister of culture. On august 28, 1997 he became the general director of "Kultura" TV company as well as the assistant director of All-Russian State TV and Radio Company (VGTRK).

In September 1997 he quit his position as a deputy minister. In January 1998 he hosted "After News" program on Kultura channel. From May 21, 1998 to January 31, 2000 he was the head of VGTRK. On Fenruary 9, 2000 Shvydkoy was appointed the minister of culture.

Mikhail Shvydkoy is a professor at Russian State University of Humanities (RGGU) and the Russian Academy of Theatrical Art. He teaches history of foreign theater. Shvydkoy is a member of the Union of Russian writers, Union of theater workers, Union of journalists. Shvydkoy is the author of numerous publications on the history of theater and dramatic art.
