Federal Security Service (FSB)
The Federal Security Service, known by its Russian acronym FSB (Federalnaya Sluzhba Bezopastnosti), is a component part of the forces charged with ensuring the security of the Russian Federation, and within the limits of powers granted to it, is responsible for ensuring the security of individuals, society and the state.

The FSB is a Federal body of the executive and is under the direct jurisdication of the President of the RF. The Constitution of the RF, the Law "On the Federal Security Service bodies in the RF," other Federal laws and regulatory legal acts of the Federal bodies of state authority form the legal basis for the activity of the FSB bodies.

The main vectors in the activity of FSB bodies are counterintelligence and the fight against crime.

The FSB also has the right to engage in intelligence activity - "within the limits of its authority and in interaction with the RF External Intelligence bodies in order to gather information about threats to the security of the Russian Federation."

The bodies of the Federal Security Service constitute a single centralized system that includes:

- the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation;

- directorates (departments) of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation for separate regions and subjects of the Russian Federation (territorial security bodies);

- directorates (departments) of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, in troops and other military formations, as well as in their managing bodies (security bodies in the armed forces).

The bodies of the Federal Security Service have under their subordination enterprises, educational establishments, scientific-research, expert and military-medical establishments and subdivisions, military-construction units, special training centers and special purpose units.

The structure and organization of the activity of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation are defined by the Statute on the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation endorsed by the President of the Russian Federation.

The FSB of the Russian Federation is headed by the Director of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation having the rights of a Federal minister. The post of Director of the Federal Security Service corresponds to the military rank of Army General.

The forefather of the FSB of the RF was the All-Russia Special Commission (VChK - "Cheka") that was organized for combatting counter-revolution and sabotage in Soviet Russia on December 20, 1917 following a decision by the Council of Peoples Commissars. Felix Dzerzhinsky was appointed its first chairman.

In July 1934, according to a decision by Central Executive Committee, the State Security bodies were incorporated into the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs (NKVD) of the USSR.

In 1946 the NKGB was transformed into the Ministry of State Security (MGB).

The State Security Committee (KGB) under the Council of Ministers of the USSR was established March 13, 1954.

On May 6, 1991 the Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR, Boris Yeltsin and the Chairman of the KGB of the USSR, V. Kryuchkov signed a Protocol to form the State Security Committee (KGB) of the RSFSR, in accordance with a decision of the Congress of Peoples Deputies of Russia.

In December 1993 the President of the RF, Boris Yeltsin, signed a Decree abolishing the Security Ministry and creating the Federal Counterintelligence Service.

On April 3, 1995 RF President Boris Yeltsin signed the Law "On the bodies of the Federal Security Service in the Russian Federation" on the basis of which the FSB is the legal successor of the Federal Counterintelligence Service.
