The Armed forces of the Russian Federation
The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is a state military organization forming the basis of the country's defenses. Their purpose is the armed protection of the territorial integrity and inviolability of the Russian Federtion and the execution of other missions under coresponding international treaties.

The Armed Forces operate on the basis of the Constitution of the Russian Federation and in keeping with federal constitutional laws, including the federal law On Defense, the federal law on the Armed Forces of the Russian Federtion and other defense laws and also in line with the corresponding legislative acts of the President of the Russian Federation and the Government. The President of the Russian Federation authorizes the Armed Forces to perform missions other than designated ones, such as dealing with the aftermath of emergency situations and natural calamities, in conformity with fedeal laws.

The Armed Forces are used for the performance of missions under international treaties signed by the Russisan Federation in accordance with the terms and rules of procedure described in the treaties..

The Russian Armed Forces include national military operations departmens, associations and military units and organizations as component parts of the armed services and branches of arms of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and of the Logistical Forces. The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation do not include units of the Emergencies Ministry, Railway Troops and others.

In accordance with the Constitution, the President of the Russsian Federation is the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. He lays down gudelines for the military policy of the Russian Federation, approves military doctrine, provides leadership to the Armed Forces and directs the Armed Forces and other troops, armed formations and organizations.

The Supreme Commander-in-Chief announces general or partial mobilization, declares martial law throughout Russia or in some parts of it and immediately notifies the Federation Council and the State Duma about it. The Supreme Commander-in-Chief also issues orders on military action by the Armed Forces, enforces and cancels wartime legislative acts. and forms or abolishes organs of executive authority in time of war in accordance with a constitutional act on martial law.

In accordance with the law On Defense, the Defense Minister directs the Armed Forces through the Defense Ministry. The current defense minister is Sergei B. Ivanov, who was appointed to this post by a presidential decree issued on March 28, 2001.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces is the main department giving day-to-day direction to the country's troops and forces. Army General Anatoly Kvashnin is the current Chief of Staff.

Russia's Armed Forces are divided into four armed services, each of which is designed for the conduct of military operations in four environments: land, sea, air and outer space. The Land Forces, the Strategic Missile Force, the Air Force and the Navy are Russia's armed services. Russia's President appoints the Commander-in-Chief of each of the armed services.

The Space Force is a specialized subdivision of the Armed Forces. Its task is ensuring the country's security by performing intelligence missions and supplying relevant information. Colonel General Anatoly Perminov is the current Commander of the Space Force.

Russia's Strategic Nuclear Force, which is accountable to the country's top leadership, plays a special role in its defenses. The General Staff of the Armed Forces is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Force.The Force consists of three components: the Strategic Missile Force, strategic missile-carrying submarines of the Navy and strategic bombers of the Air Force. This structure also includes nuclear arms depots.

The General Staff is the body that plans the employment of strategic forces, with the Central Command Post of the General Staff directinng the combat employment of the Strategic Nuclear Force.

The Strategic Missile Force is Russia's nuclear shield. It is accountable to the country's top leadership. The number of warheads has been cut down to 6,000 in accordance with the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty. In accordance with START-2 their numbers are expected to go down to 3,500.
