Republic of Kalmykia
Kalmykia has a status of a republic in the USSR since 1935.
Area: 76,000 sq km.
Population: 315,700 - 40.8% live in towns and 59.2% in the urban area of the republic.
The capital is Elista.
The republic has 13 regions, 3 cities, and a Chess City territory with a special status.
Kalmykia has resources of oil, natural gas, bischofite, and raw materials for construction.
Its economy comprises oil production facilities, light and food industries, printing facilities, power engineering, production of construction materials and mechanical engineering.
The main production facilities in the republic are the Kalmenergo power engineering enterprise, the Kalmykneft oil company, the state-run Elista Road Department No 1, the Elektrosvyaz RK company, the Stroidetal works in the construction industry, the ZBI-1 plant, the Rudo El company, the Ulan Heech Federal State Unitary Enterprise, and the Elista-Lada company.
Executive power in Kalmykia is represented by President of the Republic Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, Vice President Valery Bogdanov, and the Government of the Republic. The Chairman of the Government is Alexander Dorzhdeyev.
Legislative power is exercised by the People's Khural (parliament) of the Republic of Kalmykia. Its Chairman is Valery Bembetov.
