The President of the Russian Federation is head of state.
The President is the guarantor of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, human rights and the rights and liberties of citizens. In accordance with procedures stated in the Constitution of the Russian Federation, the President takes measures to protect the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of the Russian Federation and ensures coordination in the functioning of agencies of state authority.
The President defines the main directions of the state's domestic and foreign policy and represents the Russian Federation inside the country and in international relations.
The President of the Russian Federation is the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation.
The President is elected for a term of four years by the citizens of the Russian Federation by secret ballot on the basis of equitable and direct suffrage.
One person cannot hold the post of President of the Russian Federation for more than two terms in succession.
The President is immune from prosecution.
The President terminates his functions after the expiry of his term of office when a newly elected President of the Russian Federation swears into office. The functions of the President of the Russian Federation might be terminated before the expiry of his term of office in the event of resignation, permanent inability to perform presidential functions on account of ill health or removal from office. In this case presidential elections should take place within three months of the early termination of functions. The President of the Russian Federation can be removed from office by the Federation Council only on the basis of charges of high treason brought by the State Duma or another heavy crime confirmed by the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Court, affirming that the charges have been made in keeping with statutory procedures.
The official residence of the President of the Russian Federation is the Kremlin, Moscow.
Vladimir V. Putin was elected President of the Russian Federation on March 26, 2000.
