Liberal Democratic Party of Russia
Liberal Democratic party of Russia (LDPR) is an All-Russian political party. It was created in 1989 as a Liberal Democratic Party of the USSR. In April 1992 it was renamed into LDPR.
LDPR positions itself as a centrist pro-reform democratic party. It is usually regarded (especially in the mass media) as a nationalistic and imperial party. LDPR mentions Yabloko and CPRF as its main opponents.
LDPR proclaims a democratic state with a strong presidential rule and regulated market economy as its political goal. The LDPR economic program suggests strengthening of state sector, limited privatization, fight against unemployment, a tax cut for producers, economic amnesty and state monopoly on certain kinds of produce. LDPR supports the restoration of the Russian state "in the borders of the former USSR" and transition from a national division to a unitarian model of state organization.
The party is organized according to a territorial principle: there are branches in republics, krais, oblasts, autonomous districts, cities and raions. All decisions in LDPR are made by a simple majority.
During the 1999 parliamentary elections LDPR got 3,990,038 votes (5,98%) and 12 seats in the Duma.
Viktor Lebedev heads the LDPR faction in the State Duma.
Vladimir Volfovich Zhirinovskiy is the head of the party.
